About West Virginia

They call it the Mountain State for a reason, and off-road riders feel that reason in their forearms by lunchtime. West Virginia's Appalachian ridges (cut by old rivers, shaped by a century of coal and timber), stack climb after climb for ATVs, UTVs, dirt bikes, and 4x4 trucks. Hardwood forest blankets the Alleghenies; deep hollows fold through the Southern Coalfields. The routes riders use today often follow the bones of the state's industrial past, which gives the riding here a texture you don't get from purpose-built parks alone.

The headline act is the Hatfield-McCoy Trails: over 1,000 miles of trail across nine southern counties, running straight through towns like Mullens, Logan, and Welch. You can fuel up, eat, and sleep without ever loading the machine back on the trailer, the trails connect to the towns by design. Around that flagship system, private parks and designated riding areas fill in the rest of the map, from groomed courses to raw backcountry where the trail is more of a suggestion. There's a version of this state for every skill level.

The geology does the rest. Spring serves up rock gardens and mud bogs; the dry months turn the fire roads fast and dusty and open the forest trails wide. Trail towns here have built themselves around visiting riders, and it shows in the maintenance and the welcome. Follow a path along the New River Gorge or climb a ridge near the Monongahela National Forest and the view at the top explains why people keep coming back.

  • OHV Trail Permit

    A valid trail permit is required to ride on designated trail systems such as the Hatfield-McCoy Trails. Permits are typically purchased online or at authorized vendors.

  • Vehicle Registration

    West Virginia titles ATVs and UTVs but does not require them to be registered for off-road or trail use, DMV registration and a license plate are needed only to run on public roads as a street-legal special-purpose vehicle. To ride systems like the Hatfield-McCoy Trails you buy a trail User Permit, not a DMV decal.

  • Helmet and Eye Protection

    West Virginia law requires a DOT-approved helmet for any ATV rider or passenger under 18. Permitted trail systems go further, the Hatfield-McCoy Trails require a DOT- or Snell-approved helmet and eye protection for every rider and passenger, whatever their age.

  • Spark Arrestor and Muffler

    All OHVs must be equipped with a USFS-approved spark arrestor and a muffler that keeps noise levels within state-mandated limits to protect the environment and comply with local ordinances.

01Are helmets required for all OHV riders in West Virginia?
It depends where you ride. West Virginia law only mandates a helmet for ATV riders and passengers under 18, but the permitted trail systems set a higher bar: the Hatfield-McCoy Trails require a DOT- or Snell-approved helmet and eye protection for everyone, whatever their age. On terrain this steep and rocky, the rule needs no defending.
02Can I ride my out-of-state registered OHV in West Virginia?
Yes, current home-state registration generally covers you on the designated trail systems. Just don't confuse registration with access: a West Virginia trail permit may still be required on top of it.
03What types of terrain can I expect on West Virginia's off-road trails?
Nearly the full menu: rocky ascents and descents, mud, hard-packed dirt roads, stream crossings, and winding forest paths. Systems typically rate their trails, so you can pick your fights, or all of them.
04Are there age restrictions for operating OHVs on West Virginia trails?
