About Virginia

Virginia runs from Appalachian ridgeline in the west down through the rolling Piedmont to the coastal plain, and the riding changes with every step of that descent. Designated OHV trails cluster in the national forests, George Washington and Jefferson chief among them, with a handful of privately operated parks filling in the map. The menu is honest mountain fare: hardwood forest, rocky climbs that make you pick a line, creek crossings that leave mud on everything. ATVs, UTVs, dirt bikes, and 4x4s all have ground to work with here, and the difficulty scales from first-timer to technical.

The far southwest is the headline. Around Norton, Spearhead, and St. Paul, the Spearhead Trails system stretches across old Appalachian country: steep climbs, technical descents, and long looks off the ridgetops, all carved into some of the oldest mountains on the continent. Head east and the George Washington National Forest offers a different rhythm: dense woodland, well-kept forest roads that gradually rough up into something more demanding. Between the two, the state covers a lot of ground, literally.

The seasons do real work on these trails. Spring greens everything up and leaves mud in the low spots. Summer means warm days and dust when the rain holds off. Fall is the show, foliage over every ridgeline, and winter brings cold, quiet rides with snow dusting the higher elevations, along with the closures that come with it. Weather up here changes trail access fast, so checking conditions and trail status before you drive out isn't optional. It's the difference between a ride and a locked gate.

  • OHV Registration/Permit

    Virginia has no statewide OHV registration program and no state trail-use permit. Gas or diesel ATVs and off-road motorcycles over 50cc purchased new on or after July 1, 2006 must be titled with the Virginia DMV. Individual trail systems, such as Spearhead Trails, require their own trail permit, bought from the operator, not the state.

  • Age and Supervision Requirements

    No one under 16 may operate an adult-size ATV in Virginia, children under 12 are limited to engines of 70cc or less, and those aged 12 to 15 to engines of 90cc or less. There are also specific age restrictions for operating certain types of OHVs, with minimum ages often set for ATVs based on engine size.

  • Safety Equipment

    Riders of ATVs, UTVs, and dirt bikes are required to wear a DOT-approved helmet and eye protection when operating their vehicles. Other protective gear like gloves and sturdy footwear are highly recommended.

  • Spark Arrestor Requirement

    All off-road vehicles must be equipped with a U.S. Forest Service approved spark arrestor in good working condition to prevent wildfires. This is a crucial safety and environmental regulation.
