We source maps and boundaries from free public GIS portals instead of licensing an expensive nationwide dataset, so there is no per-user data bill to pass on.

Yes. Our off-road maps, GPS track recording, and public-land boundaries are free, with no subscription. The paid apps charge because they cover every trail in the country; we stay focused on the areas our community actually rides, which is what keeps it free.
Downloadable offline maps are the one thing we do not have yet, and we would rather say so than let you find out at the trailhead. The topo and satellite maps are free to use on the web and in the app without an account, and GPS track recording keeps running with no bars at all and syncs when you are back in range. If you need a downloaded area to draw with zero signal today, onX and Gaia still do that and we do not. It is on the way.
Paid services charge because they map every county nationwide, and that breadth costs money. We source data from free public GIS and rider-contributed local knowledge and stay area-specific, so there is no per-user data bill to pass on.
