HMT Pocahontas Trail System

The Hatfield-McCoy Pocahontas Trail System occupies Mercer County in the southern coalfields of West Virginia: higher terrain than the Logan County systems, running from 2,200 to 2,600 feet elevation across a more open, plateau-like landscape. The Pocahontas system covers 57 miles, making it one of the smaller HMT systems by mileage, but its trail character compensates for the tighter network: the high-elevation routing delivers panoramic ridgeline views across the New River country and Bluefield basin, and the cooler temperatures at altitude extend riding comfort into July and August when the lower HMT systems are steaming. Trail ratings favor the beginner-to-intermediate spectrum, mostly novice-level with intermediate and a few expert options, making Pocahontas a good introduction to the HMT experience for newer riders or groups that include less experienced members. The system connects to the Indian Ridge, Pinnacle Creek, and Warrior systems, all within McDowell County to the southwest, unlocking a combined network of 265+ miles from the same permit. The Pocahontas trailhead in Mercer County provides parking, an information kiosk, and basic facilities. ATVs, UTVs, and off-highway motorcycles are all permitted on designated routes. Annual HMT trail permit required: $26.50 (WV residents) / $65 (non-residents). Sunrise to sunset year-round.
