OHV Registration
All off-highway vehicles (OHVs) operated on public lands in Ohio must be registered with the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV). This registration involves a one-time title and a registration renewed every three years (it expires December 31 of the third year after it is issued). Vehicles must display the registration sticker prominently.
OHV Operator Age and Safety Training
Operators under 16 may not operate an OHV on the land of another (including public land) unless accompanied by a licensed person at least 18 years old; Ohio does not require an OHV safety-education certificate, though a safety course is strongly recommended. While not always mandatory for adults, a safety course is highly recommended for all riders.
Ohio DNRHelmet Requirement
On Ohio's main public riding lands, a helmet is required for everyone, not just minors. Both Wayne National Forest and ODNR state-forest APV areas mandate a DOT-approved helmet and eye protection for all operators and riders, regardless of age. Ohio statute sets no separate age-based helmet rule for off-road use, so the land manager's requirement is what binds, and on the public trails where most riding happens, a helmet is mandatory at any age.
