About Florida

Sugar sand is the first thing Florida teaches you. Forget rock ledges and mountain grades: this state runs on flatwoods, pine forest, and cypress swamp, and its trails trade elevation for deep sand, mud bogs, and water crossings that swallow the unprepared. The Ocala National Forest anchors the public-land side with a broad network of routes, while private off-road parks scattered across the state fill in everything from technical courses to open sand tracks, all of it under a subtropical canopy that makes the riding feel like nowhere else.

The ground itself is old seabed. Ancient marine sediments left Florida with a sandy base that keeps conditions in constant motion: firm, packed sand one minute, loose sugar sand the next, demanding real throttle control and a vehicle set up for it. Come the wet season, those same trails flood into sprawling mud pits, a different sport entirely for riders equipped to play it. Dry and dusty or saturated and waterlogged, sometimes within the same forest system on the same day: that's the deal.

The private parks round out the picture. Concentrated in Central Florida and along the panhandle, they cater directly to ATV, UTV, dirt bike, and 4x4 truck riders with amenities, designated obstacle courses, and in some cases camping on site. Offerings run from beginner loops to extreme rock crawling and mudding features, and they vary widely from one gate to the next, so verify the rules and the terrain before you load the trailer.

  • OHV Registration & Decals

    Off-highway vehicles (OHVs) operated on public lands in Florida, such as National Forests, typically require a state-issued OHV decal. This decal signifies compliance with state OHV laws. OHVs used exclusively on private property do not require state registration.

  • Age and Supervision Requirements

    Operators under 16 years of age must be supervised by an adult at least 18 years old. Riders under 16 operating an ATV on public lands must also possess a valid safety certificate issued upon completion of an approved ATV safety course.

    All OHV operators and passengers under the age of 16 are required to wear a U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) approved safety helmet. While not legally mandated for those 16 and older, wearing a helmet is strongly recommended for all riders.

    All off-road vehicles operating on public lands in Florida must be equipped with a U.S. Forest Service approved spark arrestor. This is a critical wildfire prevention measure, especially during dry seasons.

01What kind of terrain can I expect in Florida?
Deep sugar sand and mud, in shifting proportions depending on the season. The trails run through pine flatwoods, palmetto scrub, and cypress swamp, and almost never over rock. Wet-season riding means real mud; dry season means loose, demanding sand.
02Are helmets required for off-road riding in Florida?
