About Utah

Slickrock in the morning, pine forest by afternoon, Utah can do that. The state runs from the red rock canyons of Moab to the high-alpine timber of the Wasatch Range, and in between sit enormous tracts of public land managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and U.S. Forest Service (USFS), laced with thousands of miles of designated OHV trail. The state keeps investing in the network, too, which means the riding gets better and stays accessible for every skill level, whether you're on an ATV, UTV, dirt bike, or in a 4x4 truck.

Southern Utah is its own animal. Around Hurricane and Blanding the riding turns to slickrock, deep sand dunes, and technical rock crawling, grippy sandstone one minute, tire-swallowing sand the next. Sand Hollow State Park stacks red dunes against a reservoir, a combination that exists almost nowhere else. Farther north, the Paiute Trail system threads central Utah's mountains: cooler air, pine forest, ridgeline running, and long views across distant ranges and valleys.

The scale is what stays with you. On this much public land you can find a mellow scenic loop for the family or a technical line that humbles veterans, sometimes off the same trailhead. Utah runs its OHV program actively (rider education, clear trail marking), because the desert crust and the high country both scar easily. Stay on the route, and the landscapes that make this state worth the trip stay intact.

Know before you go in Utah

  • Non-Resident OHV Permit

    Non-residents operating an OHV in Utah must obtain a non-resident OHV permit. This permit helps fund trail maintenance, signage, and enforcement efforts. It is required for all off-highway vehicles, including dirt bikes, ATVs, UTVs, and snowmobiles.

  • OHV Education Requirements

    Since 2023, every OHV operator on Utah public lands must hold an OHV education certificate, a youth certificate for anyone under 18 and an adult certificate for those 18 and older. Riders under 8 years old are restricted from operating OHVs on public lands, except on private property with owner permission.

  • Spark Arrestor and Muffler

    All OHVs operated in Utah must be equipped with a U.S. Forest Service approved spark arrestor in good working condition. Additionally, vehicles must have a muffler that keeps exhaust noise within legal decibel limits to prevent environmental disturbance and comply with state law.

  • Operator Age and Safety Gear

    Operators under 18 years of age are required to wear an approved helmet when riding an OHV. Eye protection is also highly recommended for all riders. Specific age restrictions apply to different classes of OHVs, so verify the requirements for your machine type.

01Do I need a special permit to ride my OHV in Utah if I'm from out of state?
Yes, every non-resident OHV on Utah public lands needs a non-resident OHV permit, which helps fund the state's trail system. Permits are sold online and through authorized vendors, so pick one up before the trip.
02What is the best time of year to go off-roading in Utah?
Fall and spring, for most of the state, mild temperatures across both desert and foothills. Summer is the season for high mountain trails when the desert bakes, and winter opens up mild, quiet riding in the southern deserts.
03Are there trails suitable for beginners in Utah?
Plenty. Utah rates and marks a wide range of easy and moderate routes suited to beginners and families, the Paiute Trail system and parts of Sand Hollow are good places to start. Check trail ratings before you commit to a route.
04Can I rent an OHV in Utah?
Easily. Outfitters in Moab, Hurricane, Marysvale, and other trail towns rent ATVs, UTVs, and sometimes dirt bikes, often with guided-tour options, a practical way to sample the terrain before hauling your own machine out.
05What safety equipment is required for OHV riders in Utah?
Riders under 18 must wear a helmet by law; adults aren't required to, but helmets and eye protection are strongly recommended for everyone. Every OHV also needs a spark arrestor and a proper muffler.
06Are there any age restrictions for operating OHVs in Utah?
