About New York

Upstate New York is a different state entirely, and riders know it. Past the cities the land turns to forest, rolling hills, and rock: the deep woods of the Adirondacks, the snow-buried Tug Hill Plateau, the Finger Lakes country. Trails here run from rocky climbs to muddy forest two-track to wide-open play areas, with room for ATVs, UTVs, dirt bikes, and 4x4 trucks. Most riding happens on land run by state agencies or private operators, which usually means marked routes, maintained trails, and clear rules.

Each region rides differently. The Tug Hill Plateau, wedged between Lake Ontario and the Adirondacks, catches some of the heaviest snowfall in the East, which means brutal mud in spring and lush, fast trails by midsummer. Down in the Southern Tier and parts of the Catskills, state forests and private parks send riders winding through hardwood stands, across creeks, and over enough elevation change to keep it interesting, with the occasional vista that makes you shut the engine off for a minute.

One caveat matters: the core of the Adirondack Park is largely closed to motorized use. The legal riding lives in designated OHV parks and trail systems spread around the state, most of them run with a hard emphasis on sustainability and rider safety: registration, helmets, and sound limits all enforced. Trail availability shifts with the seasons and each park sets its own rules, so a little planning up front is what separates a great weekend from a wasted drive.

OHV Registration
All ATVs, UTVs, and dirt bikes operated in New York State must be registered with the Department of Motor Vehicles. This registration is separate from any vehicle registration for street use and is required for off-road operation.
Helmet Requirement
Every person operating or riding on an ATV, UTV, or dirt bike in New York State must wear an approved protective helmet. This applies to all riders, regardless of age, for safety on public and private trails.
Age and Safety Course Requirements
Since a February 2024 law, the minimum age to operate an ATV on public land rose from 10 to 14. A 14- or 15-year-old may ride public trails without adult supervision only after completing a DMV-approved ATV safety course; without it, an operator under 16 must be supervised by an adult at least 18 years old. Specific rules apply by age group. Verify with NYS DMV.
Equipment Standards
OHVs must be equipped with a functional muffler and a spark arrestor. Headlights and taillights are also required for operation during periods of reduced visibility, such as at night or in adverse weather.
