Seminoe State Recreation Area OHV

Seminoe State Recreation Area is a 2,662-acre Wyoming State Parks facility on the north shore of Seminoe Reservoir in Carbon County, approximately 35 miles north of Sinclair and the I-80 corridor, providing water-based recreation access and OHV riding on the adjacent BLM and state trust land that surrounds the reservoir. The Seminoe riding area centers on the Seminoe Sand Dunes, a dune field of approximately 3,000 acres adjacent to the Seminoe SRA boundary on BLM-managed land, which constitutes Wyoming's second-largest dune formation (after Killpecker in the Great Divide Basin). The dune formation is geologically unusual for its high-plains location: the North Platte River drainage's sediment transport and the strong prevailing westerly winds of south-central Wyoming built the dune complex over thousands of years, producing sand mobility patterns and dune morphology that differ from the Great Divide Basin dune systems of the Killpecker field. ATVs, UTVs, dirt bikes, and sand rails make up the typical rider mix; the sand terrain favors lighter machines over full-size 4x4 trucks. The Wyoming State Parks annual pass covers day-use fees at Seminoe; Wyoming OHV registration is separately required for all motorized machines on the sand. Camping is available at the Seminoe SRA developed campground on the reservoir, making Seminoe a two-activity destination combining OHV dune riding with reservoir fishing, swimming, and boating. The SRA is less heavily visited than Killpecker Sand Dunes, giving riders more open terrain per user than the better-known southern Wyoming dune system.
