Snowy Range OHV Trails

The Snowy Range OHV trail system in the Medicine Bow National Forest covers the designated motorized routes across the Snowy Range proper: the north-south spine of the Medicine Bow Mountains west of Laramie, Wyoming, at elevations from 8,500 feet in the Centennial valley up to treeline around 11,000 feet on the flanks of Medicine Bow Peak (12,013 ft). The range's character is distinctly high-country Wyoming: quartzite and gneiss bedrock of Precambrian age produces the exposed rocky summits and the banded cliff faces that give the Snowy Range its name (the quartzite face reflects snow-white light even in summer); the mid-elevation spruce-fir forest transitions to subalpine meadow and alpine tundra above treeline; and the U-shaped glaciated valleys carved by Pleistocene alpine glaciers produce the characteristic basin-and-ridge topography that makes riding consistently interesting. Trails include the Brooklyn Lake corridor, North French Creek drainage, and the connecting routes between the valley floor and the upper basin terrain. The Snowy Range Scenic Byway (WY-130) provides paved access to the core of the range, and the OHV trail network radiates from the Brooklyn Lake and Centennial trailheads. ATVs, UTVs, and dirt bikes are the primary vehicle classes; higher-elevation technical single-track favors narrower machines. Wyoming OHV registration is required. Snow closes the higher routes from approximately October through late June. Medicine Bow-Routt NF Laramie Ranger District (307-745-2300) manages trail status.
