About Texas

Texas is big enough to hold several different off-road states inside it. The Piney Woods of East Texas ride nothing like the deserts of the Trans-Pecos; the Hill Country's rock crawling has little in common with the sandy washes near the Gulf Coast. Rain turns half the state to mud overnight. The upside of all that sprawl is choice: parks and trails scattled across every region, each with its own character, and something worth hauling out for whether you run a nimble dirt bike or a built 4x4 truck.

The geology does the sorting. Limestone of the Edwards Plateau in Central Texas, the country around Austin and San Antonio, makes for excellent rock crawling and technical trail. Head east and the humidity and rich soil produce muddy, forested routes where momentum matters more than finesse. Go far west, out toward Big Bend National Park and El Paso, and the land dries into open desert trails and rocky climbs that ask for a different driving style and a different vehicle setup altogether.

Most of Texas is private land, which is exactly why the state's dedicated off-road parks and recreation areas matter: they're where legal, managed OHV access lives. The good ones run maintained trails, real amenities, and designated areas for different kinds of riding. Rules, access requirements, and permitted vehicle types swing widely from one operation to the next, so do the homework on a specific park before you show up at the gate.

  • OHV Operation on Public Roads

    Off-highway vehicles (OHVs) are generally prohibited from operating on public roads, streets, or highways in Texas, with limited exceptions such as crossing a highway or operating on specific county roads if permitted by local ordinance. OHVs are not street-legal vehicles.

  • Helmet Requirements on Public Land

    Texas law requires every person who operates, rides, or is carried on an OHV on public property or a beach to wear a U.S. Department of Transportation-approved helmet and eye protection, regardless of age, adults included. Failing to wear the required gear on public OHV land is a Class C misdemeanor.

  • Spark Arrestor Requirement

    Any off-highway vehicle operated on public land in Texas must be equipped with a U.S. Forest Service-approved spark arrestor. This regulation helps prevent wildfires, especially in dry conditions. Many private parks also enforce this rule for safety.

  • Supervision for Young Operators

    A person younger than 14 years old operating an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) on public land in Texas must be under the direct supervision of a parent or guardian. Many private parks also have their own age and supervision policies.

01Do I need to register my OHV in Texas?
Not for private land, Texas has no statewide OHV registration requirement for vehicles ridden exclusively there, and most off-road parks are private. But to ride on public OHV land, or a TPWD-grant-funded venue, you must carry a current TPWD Off-Highway Vehicle decal (sold by TPWD online and through authorized vendors), on top of any day-use pass the park charges.
02Are helmets required for off-road riding in Texas?
On public land, yes, and not only for kids. Texas law requires every operator and passenger on an OHV to wear a DOT-approved helmet and eye protection, regardless of age; skipping it on public OHV land is a Class C misdemeanor. There's no good argument against wearing one anyway.
03What types of terrain can I expect in Texas off-road parks?
Nearly everything: deep mud in East Texas forests, rock crawling and technical sections in the Central Texas Hill Country, sandy washes and open plains in the south, and rugged desert trails out west. Each region rides like its own state.
04Can I ride my OHV on public roads in Texas?
Generally, no. OHVs aren't street-legal in Texas and are barred from public roads, streets, and highways. The exceptions are narrow (crossing a highway at a designated point, or certain county roads where a local ordinance allows it), and rare.
05Are there age restrictions for operating OHVs in Texas?
State law requires anyone under 14 operating an ATV on public land to be under direct supervision of a parent or guardian. Private parks layer their own policies on top, often setting minimum ages or supervision rules for young riders. Check before you bring the kids.
06What is the best time of year to go off-roading in Texas?
Spring and fall, for most of the state, mild temperatures and comfortable weather. Summer riding means dawn starts and evening runs to beat the heat, while winter stays mild enough in the southern half for year-round trips.
