About Arizona

Saguaros at the bottom, ponderosa pines at the top, Arizona's riding spans the whole gradient between the Sonoran Desert and the Mogollon Rim. Hundreds of miles of designated OHV trails and open areas run across BLM and U.S. Forest Service land, and the destinations don't ride alike: the granite of the Bradshaw Mountains near Prescott has nothing in common with the vast reach of the Tonto National Forest. Whichever way your taste runs, technical rock or long scenic desert routes, this state has a version of it.

Geography sets the menu. Around Phoenix and Tucson, southern Arizona serves the classic desert program: sandy washes, rocky arroyos, open plains. The Box Canyon and Florence Junction trail systems are the textbook examples, technical lines threading through saguaro and ocotillo. Drive north and the whole picture flips. Sedona's red rock country pairs moderate trails with scenery that stops conversations, and the high country near Flagstaff and Payson trades cactus for cool pine forest, exactly where you want to be when the low desert hits full summer.

What ties it together is access. Arizona's enormous public land base puts riders on historic mining roads, along ancient Native American routes, and into canyons that don't show up on the postcard. But the same range that makes the state great makes it unforgiving to the unprepared: the low desert near Yuma and the high country of the San Francisco Peaks are practically different climates. Know what ground you're headed for, the deep sand of the low desert washes asks different things of a machine than Bradshaw granite, and prepare for that, specifically.

Arizona State Parks
OHV Operator Requirements
Operators under 18 years of age must wear a USDOT-compliant helmet. While not required for adults, helmets are strongly recommended for all riders.
Arizona State Parks
Spark Arrestor and Sound Limit
Every OHV must be equipped with a U.S. Forest Service approved spark arrestor. Additionally, the OHV’s sound output must not exceed 96 decibels, measured using a specific test procedure.

01Do I need an Arizona OHV Decal if I'm from out of state?

Yes. Every OHV on Arizona public lands needs a current Arizona OHV Decal, no matter where the machine is registered. The money goes back into the state's OHV program, trails included.

02Are helmets required for OHV riders in Arizona?

Legally required only for operators and passengers under 18, who must wear a USDOT-compliant helmet. For everyone else it's a strong recommendation, Arizona rock doesn't grade on age.

03What types of terrain can I expect to ride in Arizona?

Nearly the full catalog: sandy washes, open desert flats, rocky mountain trails, and forested high-country routes. Conditions swing hard between regions and seasons, so prepare for the specific ground you're headed to.

04Are there any sound restrictions for OHVs in Arizona?

Yes, every OHV needs a U.S. Forest Service approved spark arrestor, and sound output can't exceed 96 decibels. Both rules see regular enforcement, so a loud pipe is an expensive accessory here.

05Can I ride my OHV on public roads in Arizona?

Only if it's street-legal. That means meeting specific equipment requirements (turn signals, brake lights, mirrors), plus valid registration. Machines that qualify can run certain public roads; the rest stay on the dirt.

06What should I do if I encounter wildlife on a trail?

Keep your distance and let the animal call the shots. Don't push it, don't disturb its habitat: if it's parked on the trail, wait it out or pick a slow, wide line around it. You're the guest out here.
