About Alabama

Alabama runs downhill, geologically speaking, from the tail end of the southern Appalachians in the north to the flat Gulf Coastal Plain in the south, and the riding changes with it. Up top: rocky climbs and tight forest trails. Down low: sand tracks and mud that goes on for acres. Between the two, a deep bench of public and private riding areas gives ATV, UTV, dirt bike, and 4x4 crews plenty of ways to spend a weekend, at any skill level.

The northern half of the state is where the terrain gets serious. Around the Talladega and Bankhead National Forests, riders work rolling hills, hardwood timber, and creek after creek; towns like Anniston and Jasper sit within striking distance of the OHV parks built on that ground. Head south and the land flattens out, trading rock for sand, clay, and water crossings: the country around Conecuh National Forest rides that way, though OHV access there depends on the land manager, so check first.

The wildcard everywhere is the red clay. Dry, it packs into dusty hardpack you can move fast on. Wet, it turns to grease, and a trail you cleaned last month will humble you after a night of rain. Add the rock gardens up north and the wide sandy runs down south, often inside the same park, and Alabama keeps you honest. The mild climate is the bonus: this is riding you can do twelve months a year.

OHV Registration and Titling
As of January 1, 2026, Alabama requires a certificate of title only for off-highway vehicles (ATVs and UTVs) with a 2026-or-later model year; older machines are exempt, and general OHV registration stays voluntary. While state registration for general OHV use is not universally mandated, many designated riding areas and National Forests may require specific permits or passes.
Spark Arrestor Requirement
