Best Time to Go
When to go
When to ride depends on heat, mud, and seasonal closures more than anything. Desert parks are best in the cool months; northern and mountain trails are summer-and-fall affairs, often closed by snow or spring mud. Always check the park’s own trail status before you go.

Desert Southwest
The dunes and desert trails of the Southwest are a fall-through-spring playground. Summer heat is extreme and dangerous; the cool months bring big crowds and perfect conditions.

Mountain West
High-country trails open as the snow melts and close when it returns. Summer and early fall are the season; spring "mud season" damages trails and is often off-limits.

Southeast & Midwest
Clay and forest trails ride much of the year, with spring and fall the most comfortable. Summer is hot and humid; winter is cool but can be muddy after rain.

Pacific Coast
Coastal dunes and forest trails from California to Oregon ride well much of the year, with a wet winter. Summer and fall offer the driest, firmest conditions.
