The Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest up north carries thousands of miles of multi-use trail through big pines and past clear lakes: real long-distance country where an ATV, UTV, or dirt bike can string together a full day without repeating a mile. Signage is good, maintenance is funded, and the network keeps growing.

Drop into the middle of the state and the ground changes under you. Around the Black River State Forest the trails turn sandy, cutting through pine barrens and oak savanna, skirting the cranberry bogs that make this stretch of Wisconsin look like nowhere else. It rides fast where the sand packs and technical where it doesn't. Glaciers and old river systems did the landscaping here, and the variety they left behind keeps the riding honest.

Farther south, the Kettle Moraine State Forest shows off the glacial leftovers by name: kames, kettles, and rolling moraine hills.
