Hungry Valley SVRA

Hungry Valley State Vehicular Recreation Area is California's second-largest SVRA at 19,000 acres in the Tehachapi Mountains near Gorman in Los Angeles County, approximately 70 miles north of Los Angeles on Interstate 5 near the Tejon Pass summit, making it the most proximate large-scale OHV destination to the greater Los Angeles metro area. The Gorman location at 2,700 to 5,200 feet elevation in the Transverse Ranges gives Hungry Valley a terrain character distinct from the desert SVRAs to the east: chaparral-covered hillsides of chamise, manzanita, and scrub oak; open grassland benches carved by the creek drainages flowing toward Quail Lake and Pyramid Lake; and the exposed ridgeline terrain of the Tehachapi Mountains with views across the Los Angeles basin on clear days. The 130-mile trail network covers the full range of rider skill levels with designated route difficulties: beginner-accessible two-track in the flat valley bottom sections, intermediate hill climbs through the chaparral, and advanced expert terrain on the rocky ridgeline routes that approach the upper elevation of the SVRA. ATVs, UTVs, dirt bikes, and full-size 4x4 trucks are all permitted on designated routes, one of the few California SVRAs that accommodates the full vehicle size spectrum. A California OHV green sticker or street registration is required; day-use fees are charged at the entrance station. Hungry Valley operates a full campground and hosts numerous organized events throughout the year.
