Houston Valley OHV Trails

Houston Valley Off-Highway Vehicle Trail System is the largest USFS OHV system in Georgia: 25 miles of two-way trails covering approximately 2,600 acres in Walker County in the northwest corner of the state, roughly 25 miles south of Chattanooga and 90 miles northwest of Atlanta in the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest. The Walker County location puts this system at the very edge of the Cumberland Plateau's southern extension: the terrain reflects that geology with moderate but genuine ridgeline relief, hardwood forest canopy of oak and hickory on the uplands, and bottomland corridors along the drainage systems feeding the Chattooga River watershed. Trail ratings span easy to most difficult, with the bulk of the system in the intermediate range, accessible enough for riders who are past the beginner stage without requiring the advanced technical skills demanded by the system's harder sections. ATVs, dirt bikes, and UTVs are permitted on designated routes, but vehicles wider than 50 inches are not permitted, a significant restriction that excludes many current full-size UTVs. Permits are required: $5/operator day pass or $50 annual pass, available at the trailhead. Parking for approximately 35 tow vehicles, an ADA-compliant loading ramp, a vault toilet, and three free primitive campsites are on site. The system closes seasonally after significant rain events.
