Sand Mountain

Sand Mountain Recreation Area covers 4,795 acres in Churchill County, west-central Nevada, 25 miles southeast of Fallon on US Highway 50. The central feature is Sand Mountain, a single dune approximately 3.5 miles long, 1 mile wide, and 600 feet high — described by BLM as the largest single dune in the Great Basin. Permitted vehicles include ATVs, motorcycles, sand rails, dune buggies, and side-by-sides; sand sailing and sandboarding are also permitted. The area has 23 miles of designated trails established to protect Kearny Buckwheat habitat and the Sand Mountain Blue Butterfly. Vehicle travel off the open dunes must remain on the designated trail system. Day and annual pass fees apply. Facilities include primitive camping at the dune base and vault toilets; no water is available on-site.
